The Centerport Fire Department responded to the 6:35 p.m. alarm and were assisted by the Halesite, Northport and Greenlawn fire departments. While searching the house, firefighters found a cat in distress overcome by smoke in a corner of the basement. “Sam” a male yellow tabby cat was brought out on the front lawn where Centerport and Halesite firefighters administered oxygen through a special pet-sized mask and kept the cat warm and comfortable. About 75 firefighters were on the scene with ten fire/rescue trucks and had the fire under control within 40 minutes. (April 27, 2009) —Photo: Steve Silverman
